My Package: The Package Project 2011

I received my beautifully wrapped and excitng package from my partner - Jodie (Whiskars Lane) at the end of last year and it was such a joy! I will share what was inside next week. Jodie just took part in Finders Keepers in Australia - another must attend on my long list! Visit her blog to see some of her creations (and her cute kitty).

I played around with the blog yesterday and edited a couple of things - I hope you like the new look? I also introduced some sunny yellow and you can now also see links to my tumblr, pinterest etc... on the left.

I love editing the look and hopefully making it easier to find things and links. Am I missing something or would you like to see more of certain posts? Leave me a comment as I would love to hear your thoughts.

A dear friend recently moved to Los Angeles and I wanted to send a little gift to her new address so that upon arrival she would be welcomed by something special. I need not tell you all about my insane love for stationery and this friend shares this weird and wonderful trait with me! Vanilla House is a delightful shop in Durban's Florida Road that stocks beautiful flowers and gifts that compete with the blooms in their perfection! Gabriela runs this shop which is a must visit. I chatted to her to find out more about the space and products...

VanillaHouse has been on Florida for as long as I can remember...what is some of the history behind the business?

Yes! Vanilla House has been on Florida road for a long time, almost 10 years. The previous owner had a huge reputation regarding her good eye for new gift trends and one off pieces. During May last year, after almost 10 years of trading she decided it was time for her to retire, and enjoy her grandkids. That was when I came onto scene, at that time I was working for Fresh Flowers International which is next door to Vanilla House and realized that the back section of the shop wasn’t being used at its maximum potential. So I decided to take over Vanilla House and bring it inside Fresh Flowers and join them both.

How have you changed the shop and products by opening the ‘new’ Vanilla House?

We wanted to create a perfect space for our customers to find that special gift, and also make their shopping experience very pleasant. All our products changed as I became the new buyer, and we gave the shop a fresher and younger look.

What is your favourite product in the store at the moment?

Oh...our products are constantly changing, but right now I would say that my favourite is a pair of white porcelain antelope horns.

I think most creatives dream of running their own shop space...what is your average day like?

As I get to the shop I put the music on and light some candles, then I am ready to start my day. I always have a look around the shop, to see what has been selling, or to see which section needs a lift or a change. Every now and again I change the windows, or bring down some pieces that are on a top shelf. This is done when I’m free which thankfully is not that often, besides that I’m talking to customers, listening to their gift needs, wrapping, doing the books, and all that not so fun admin stuff.

What do you enjoy most about the process of picking products for the shop?

That is definitely the best part of it all! I love sourcing new suppliers, looking to some inspiration in magazines and on blogs. The trade shows are mind boggling and very tiring but I still enjoy visiting them. When I see a piece or product the first thing I think is if I would like to be given it, then if I was buying it who would I give it to, if I succeed on those answers that piece is definitely going to the shop.

Gabi is being super sweet and is giving away this cute hippo note holder! Mmm...think I need her for my desk!

The 12 months of 2011: Part 1

These are a few of my highlights from 2011:

1 - January:

A Penguin Party - Casey a very dear friend hosted one of the best birthday parties I have attended! It was a brilliant start to the year! (Photo taken by Lauren)

2 - February:

A trip to Jozi and Pretoria. I finally got to visit Wolves and indulge in a HUGE piece of red velvet cake!

3 - March:

Goodbye Mr Price and hello to living the Cupcake Couture life full time! I resigned as Junior Ladies Footwear Buyer and dived into a new adventure...and I haven't looked back since.

4 - April:

I launched Build a Brooch at I heart Market. It was also really great to be featured in Marie Claire - the start of a fabulous year for Cupcake Couture press.

5 - May:
I received a gigantic corsage order from East Coast Radio which also had to be complete in record time. It was a challenge, but it helped me realise that with the support of my dear family all is possible.

6 - June:
Cupcake Couture's wedding corsages / boutonnieres really started taking off as the groomsmen accessory du jour (Photo by Julie Patrick). Wakaberry also landed in Durban and added some sprinkles to our days!

I spotted these tags over at Creature Comforts and thought they matched the colouring around here (tags from Hey Look). I have drooled over the post about five times - so many talented people sharing their beautiful creations with the world. I quickly popped out and printed the 'reindeer hugs' cards to add to our table decor. I don't want this jolly season to be over yet!

I am not being very entertaining with my posts at the moment, but I am trying to finish all my work so that I can take some time off asap! All I want to be doing is wrapping gifts, humming to carols (good ones not Boney M) and relaxing, but alas my boss is very strict!

I met Wendy from ilovebokkie through a friend and earlier this year she became one of my first clients and a wonderful client she has been! Her work is truly inspiring and I am excited to feature her today!

What is ilovebokkie all about?

ilovebokkie is a kid’s brand which creates kids spaces, furniture and lovelies. It is an eco-aware, true to South Africa, antidote to "made in china" kids brand. I also like to describe it as "for the young and young at heart" as some of the products are not just for the kiddos, there’s a blurring of the boundary between adult and kids with some of the products. I have also recently added a "Finders Keepers" banner to the Shop page. Here I sell “previously loved” kids lovelies, my way of creating a little nostalgia and bringing back some childhood memories for us grown-ups.

And what about Sketchbok?

Sketch Bok/DBN is a design and decor studio. I mainly design and decorate residential interiors. This includes everything from designing kitchen, bathrooms and built in cupboards, working with carpenters and other manufacturers, to specifying finishes such as flooring, wall finishes etc. Then there’s the decor side which focuses on soft furnishings such as putting together fabric schemes, window coverings, wallpapers, furniture, objet d'art etc. I also get involved in project managing small renovations. I design homes that reflect the client’s lifestyle and is true to who they are. Interior Design in my absolute passion and i LOVE what id do!

How do you separate your thoughts into ilovebokkie creativity and the interior work you do for Sketchbok? Or do you feel the flow is seamless?

Sketch Bok/DBN has become my 9-5 and ilovebokkie sort of fits in between. I mostly work on new products for ilovebokkie on the weekends when I’m a little more relaxed, but ideas don’t stick to a schedule, so they do pop up at the strangest times. I just juggle the two! I suppose it is seamless in a way.

What lead you to owning your own creative business?

I wanted to get recognition for my designs and I wanted more freedom of time so I could spend more time with my now 2 year old son, Rylee.

What are your top tips for being your own boss? Be Organised, disciplined and I always have a to-do list! Cannot function without them. And never lose the passion for what you are doing and what you love.

What is a perfect Christmas like in your household?

Just being surrounded by those you love. Earlier this year my sister (who is my best friend) relocated to Joburg and my father past away from cancer, so family time has become so very important to me and I really treasure our time together.

Are there new products and ideas that we can we look forward to in 2012?

I’m in the process of creating a kids rocker, cool ottomans, chair slipcovers and growth charts. So watch this space! Plus there’s a whole furniture range by Sketch Bok/DBN on the horizon!

I added these to my market table on Saturday. They are like the gift packs that I blogged about, but they don't have a gift inside so that you can add one. It has wrapping, a tag, pen, stickers, something extra like a mini pack of playing cards, sprinkles (just for fun), some buttons and some twine. So...you can pick a pressie and then pop it inside the jar. Fun! They will be available again this Saturday along with more gift packs.

Christmas withouth the kitsch

Christmas is upon us! I love this jolly season of gift giving, but I cringe at the site of fake trees, tinsel and kitsch decorations. The traditional green and red sends me running and the shopping mall queues and the pushing and shoving is enough to keep me in hiding until the new year. However, with so many handmade beauties out there, celebrating Christmas sans the kitsch is so easy and much more fulfilling! A touch of tradition is always welcome, but clever, unique and interesting items are far lovelier.

I have just finished these bright and cheery birdie clips. Each one is sold on a vintage children's playing card. So...you can wear the little clip and add the card to your inspiration board. They make perfect stocking fillers and there is even a little card with a Christmas theme...see the little girl standing with holly above her head...adorable.

A cup of tea

How I wish I had time to sit and have a cup of tea, but no time to stop and that is why posting around here has been a bit slow! So much to do at the moment, but please bare with me...all will be back to normal soon. On the to list is mostly work and I am so excited to be taking the whole weekend off including Friday. Daniel and I have been married for one year and we are taking a 'staycation' right here in our wonderful city. Phones will be switched off, work put away and to do lists forgotten (for a while at least). We have some lovely and relaxing outings planned and loads of couch time!

I spotted this beautiful set at the SPCA in Kloof...such a fast snap and a touch blurry, but thought I would share it with you. They have some lovely home ware in stock at the moment.

Days Gone By...

Today is a day off for Cupcake Couture! Hooray! You see...a very dear friend from London is in town and it is the first time we are seeing each other in three years, four months and 28 day! Crazy! Many days have passed, but our friendship is still strong and I just can't wait to spend a day with her. I don't often speak of my life in London, but here are a mish mash of photos of days spent doing amazing things. Have a happy Monday!

The admin system this year was much more detailed so I feel that there wasn't a great deal of mistakes or people who got left off. I looked at every single blog of every single person taking part. Call me crazy, but I felt that I wanted to find each of you a special match. Below is what my email says... If you have a query then please feel free to mail me. If for some reason you can't take part any longer - now is the time to mail me. Thanks & happy weekend!

P.S: You and your partner can discuss how long you have to prepare and send your package. I would say about two weeks is a good time, but just chat about it and see what works.

The time is finally here...the introduction to your package partner! Hooray!

Your partner’s email address is at the top of the mail. It is now up to you to make contact.

I wrote these tips for you with love and care.

Here are some details for your swap...

What happens if I can no longer take part?

You have to let me know so that your partner doesn’t lose out. You won’t be in trouble, so send me a quick email to tell me. This will be really kind of you and will mean your partner will still get a chance t swap with someone else.

What should I do if my partner does not reply?

Give it seven days and if you don’t get a reply – mail me so that I can match you up with a new partner. If they vanish – I will add them to a list called: ‘NEVER ALLOWED TO TAKE PART...AGAIN...EVER!’

What should I send in my package?

Packages can contain anything from trinkets representing your hometown or country to handcrafted gifts or art supplies or pretty stationery. If you own your own creative or craft business – feel free to share what you make with your partner, but don’t only include items you create for your business. Your package needs to be varied and fun and chat to your partner and find out what they like. It could be nice to include a little handwritten note too.

Things to remember...

Wrap your package up well. Your package has to travel hundreds of miles to get to your partner and you would like it to arrive safely and intact.

Make sure the address you are sending it to is a hundred percent correct. A package with the wrong address will go to the wrong person and how sad that will make your partner. Double check and even triple check.

Don’t send items that can break easily. A beautiful vintage teacup is a wonderful gift, but it won’t survive the long journey.

Make sure you have paid the correct postage amount. Chat to your local post office for the most affordable and reliable service. Whether you package is sailing the high seas or flying first class – make sure it has all the right stamps!

Don’t send perishable items. Food often flags package inspections. I am sure your homemade jam is delicious, but border control won’t like the idea. For some additional guidelines see: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/mail

I worked on these packs for I heart Market and shoppers seemed to love them. They are just perfect for Christmas. Each pack contains gift giving essentials and I have called them a 'Couture Kit'. I will have more at the three I heart Markets in December and I will also have some masculine gift options.

What is inside?

A gift: The packs contain a handmade button brooch and a bird clip on a vintage playing card.

Wrapping: Either tissue paper or a little plain bag.

1m of Ribbon: To add to the wrapping.

A tag & pencil: So you can send some kind wishes along with the gift.

Something Extra: A little item to tie to the outside of the gift or even include inside. This is a novelty item to add that quirky touch.

I recently realised that my work used to be my hobby and despite the fact that I don't really have time to have a hobby I have been searching for something to do in my downtime. I seem to fill my time with work and even when I try to sit and just watch TV I always feel like I have to keep my hands busy. Last night in a bid to do something besides a late night of work I started decorating some envelopes and writing some little notes for some special friends. Loads of washi tape, doilies, glassine paper and twine...fun! I really enjoyed the decorating and realised I need to get crafty on things that don't involve my work. With Christmas around the corner I see some handmade gifts on the horizon.

In a perfect world all the tasks on my to do list would be ticked off, my cupboard would be colour co-ordinated, my floors would always be clean and I would always know what to make for dinner, I would be able to bake on a whim and wearing an apron would come as naturally as wearing a vintage skirt. But...alas...my world is far from perfect, but I am working on it. The Better Homes & Gardens Storage Magazine makes you want to Spring clean and label everything from the bread to the dirty washing. The magazine is a bit pricey, but their website offers more inspiration than you will ever need! Now...to find the time to make everything look this pretty!

I have just finished this special order and thought I would share it with you. A customer saw me wearing my version of this brooch at a market and ordered her very own. I used ribbon from Jezze Prints coupled with grosgrain. The little coral birds have been popular - I think they are so cute. The Hey Cherry girls bought the clips with them on - take a look at their post.

While in Cape Town I also had the wonderful (& interesting) opportunity of setting up a conversational panel covering the challenges that face creatives in the business of handmade. Novelty Vintage Sewing Vanity SOLD

I created this vintage inspired sewing kit inside a vanity and I am quite proud of it (not boasting - just loving). I made a similar one for the market inside a vintage tin and really enjoyed the work of making each small item really special and so I decided to make another. ~~It is for sale~~ and if you look at the photos below you will see every inch of it. I really poured love and care into it and I think that someone who loves vintage, sewing and old haberdashery items will be the perfect match for this navy little vanity. I hope you love it...

I decorated the top of the vanity with a 1950's Vogue Couture Pattern...such an elegant dame.

This is on the inside of the lid of the vanity. An embroidery frame filled with fabric, vintage pattern elements & a 'make do & mend' badge.

Glad you asked...

An old cigarette box which has been converted into a perfect button storage box. On top of the lid is a sweet tin with a tape measure inside.

Lots of lovely buttons inside the box.

An old pin box now holds threads with an old pattern picture on it as well as embroidery and a vintage glass button.

This old needle card is a real gem. Made is Czechoslovakia. It still has all of it's needles inside. Quite rare. It was slightly damaged so I added an original vintage pattern picture & vintage heart button.

Vintage Linen thread - I love the card it is around.

A giant button & two vintage cotton reels. No sewing kit is complete without a giant button!

Pins & a pencil. The pinwheel has a pattern picture on it & a very cute button.

A pink pincushion with pins, hanger & scissor charms...just for fun. The flower pins are from Japan & are some of the most pretty I have found.

A really old wool cutter still in it's original packaging. It is made in Germany and still has the manual and two spare blades inside the box...quite special.

Perhaps this is the piece de resistance... The vanity still locks so I added a little keyring to the key. An old fashioned scissor charm on vintage binding. I love the little dogs & cats on it.

The vanity is still in a near perfect condition as is it's lining.

Tell us about Lady Jane Vintage...who do you stock and what is the shop all about?

Lady Jane Vintage is a store where shoppers can find real vintage clothing and quality, exclusive vintage inspired clothing and pieces. Lady Jane is about a feeling, about a trip down memory lane, about keeping all that is stylish and glamorous alive. We are not what you’d expect of a vintage store. I think most people think of vintage shops as drab and cluttered – Lady Jane is nothing like that. The space we’ve created is feminine, inviting and full of nostalgic charm. I’ve handpicked vintage and vintage inspired pieces from South Africa and across the globe. We have one off items, Victorian inspired lace parasols, gloves, hand fans, gorgeous vintage inspired dresses, our own range of shoes and so much more. At this stage we produce clothing exclusively for ourselves and bring in pieces from other designers, such as jewellery from Genevieve Motley; reworked vintage from Moth Clothing in Cape Town; handmade jewellery from Brehan Todd; vintage clothing from the states to name a few. When sourcing vintage for the shop do you travel to find the best treasures?

I am always on the lookout wherever I go, for pieces that I think would work in the store. When travelling overseas I'll be on the lookout for interesting finds, but locally too you can pick up beautiful things, if you know what to look for.

What is your favourite era?

My favourite eras would be the 20's to 50's. I can't get enough of the 20's drop waist and flapper looks and I love the elegance of a 50's knee length dress with a circle cut skirt, so ladylike. These days most of us just throw anything together but a feminine and polished outfit can make anyone feel powerful and sexy.

What are you top vintage care tips?

Wear vintage items with care and ALWAYS check the wash care labels. Vintage items are delicate and should never be put in a washing machine. Washing by hand in a mild detergent is safest and I usually hang my vintage garments over the bath to dry, away from direct sunlight.

How did you decide to open a vintage shop? What was your inspiration?

In creating Lady Jane I have drawn inspiration from everything I have seen and experienced in my life. I just let my imagination run wild and I slowly began picking ideas from there. I came up with the idea for Lady Jane because I love vintage and wanted to create the kind of store that I would love to shop at. In the UK and America everyone shops at vintage stores, there is so much to choose from overseas. I wanted to try and recreate a shopping experience like that here in Durban. When I was growing up I used to love going through my gran’s wardrobe. I always loved that she would wear a matching bag and shoes with any outfit and her signature red lipstick is a favourite with me today. I think in some way when I came up with the idea for Lady Jane I wanted to bring back that sense of glamour that I remember seeing in my gran. But there is so much more to the store too. I wanted the glamour of the 40's but I also wanted the store to be fresh and appealing to today's women too so it had to have a funky and modern twist.

If you could dress any old Hollywood screen siren who would it be?

If I could dress any old Hollywood screen siren it would have to be Ava Gardner, she had such presence. And there is one other person...she's not an old screen siren but the beautiful and feminine Dita Von Teese always manages to look like she's stepped out of a 1940s film set. I just love her look.

A Skinny Day

While I was in Cape Town in August - I got to be an intern for a day with Heather Moore of Skinny Laminx. Yes...while on holiday I went to work and loved it! I have been following Heather's career for years and I truly respect her. The fact that she has a very successful business fuelled by her creativity is a real inspiration to me. I wanted to learn from her, see how she works and delve into her world...an Orla filled realm. After a swift walk in the morning sun we stopped at &Union for a coffee. Once back in the studio I got elbow deep into a box of products...stock taking and learning each print by name and colour. Heather was such a great boss for the day and chatted to me about challenges within a creative business and shared her tips and knowledge.

All creative businesses experience challenges. What sets you apart is how you deal with the challenges. Deal with problems head on, be realistic and don't give up too easily.

Once you are successful and your business is established - it doesn't mean that the hard work is over. With each goal that is conquered...a new set presents itself. Where there is passion...the hard work will follow

Successful businesses experience copying of their work too. Heather has encountered this and although you can't always prevent it you are allowed to speak your mind in a respectful way to alert the brand or person in question.

Make time for other people. Heather gives of her time freely, she shares her knowledge and always makes time for others who respect her work. Your business might be small and the fans few, but take a couple of minutes to reply to emails, tweets or compliments.

Create a system that works for you. Often daunting tasks get pushed to the bottom of the list and you loathe even the thought of having to tackle them. Take a difficult or tedious task and create a system for it. Heather had a board with labelled bullodog clips for filing receipts...come the end of the month they are already sorted into postage, office expenses etc...

Don't let admin kill your creativity. To do lists, piles of paperwork, slips and expenses could mean you spend hours chained to your chair and computer. Heather takes time out on a Friday for her Making Day... time to create something new.

P.S. I had fun editing the above photos - Lauren gave me a quick lesson and although she has it down to a fine art...I am just getting started. Hope that photoraphers aren't looking at them and cringing...bear with me I will get better.

Last week got away from me - between prep for I heart Market on Saturday and working on various blog projects for clients I just couldn't get around to all. I hope you enjoyed the first two reviews. The third and final vintage and thrift online review features Vintage Lover.

I met Janece via email and we started chatting about some items I was on the hunt for.

Who is behind the concept?

Janece is based in Cape Town and is a regular on the market scene. Her well designed newsletters and reminders keep you up to date on what to expect and look out for. She seems to pull some magic items from her vintage sleeve.

What did I buy?

I asked Janece to source two skirts for me. She found both...a coral dream of a skirt and a sea green pleated number that made my heart stop when I opened the package. The search was inspired by an outfit from Late Afternoon.

Service:

It was exceptional with friendly and timely replies. I was so excited that both items that I was hunting for had been sourced.

Packaging & Postage:

Beautifully wrapped with care. The small touches like ribbon, tags and a postcard with a personal note was really sweet and added a lovely touch. It took about a week and a half to arrive in Durban.

On Monday I reviewed and wrote about Guard the Vintage. Thanks so much for your feedback and comments. I really love hearing what you think.

Today I am going to be telling you about The Thrift Co. As I mentioned in the first 'tried & tested' post...online thrifting and vintage shopping is really a great way of finding a specific item.

I first met Pippa at an event that she hosted at Antique Cafe. It was cake, tea and thrifting all in one.

Who is behind the concept?

Pippa and Bevan are the duo who thrift and scout on your behalf. The most unique element to their business is the fact that they buy items from sellers who are looking to spring clean...so no more buyers remorse. I love using the service when I clear out my cupboard and sell newer pieces that I no longer wear. Pippa works in fashion and Bevan has great style so together they add their own signature to the 'brand'.

What did I buy?

I bought a Mr Price nude jacket from the event. I must have missed it while it was in store so it was a lucky find.

Service:

Due to the fact that the couple lives in Durban - I don't have to rely on an email relationship to see or buy products. I would say that there are several vintage items, but the bulk of the pieces are secondhand.

Packaging & Postage:

Once again because I can pop round to I heart Market and see what is on offer I have not received my item via post. I can, however say that their newly launched caravan is a must see. Worth missing out on the surprise of a package in the post.

The main concern for shoppers when buying secondhand is the condition of items. Feel free to ask sellers about the condition if not stated. For example - you can check if all buttons are in tact, zips work or if the item needs repairing. Damage can easily be fixed and might allow you to customise it further...add new buttons or even add an interesting feature to conceal where an item has been mended.

If you love the thrill of scrounging around thrift stores, the fulfillment of finding that perfect frock after rail rifling for hours or the sweet success of bagging that blouse that looks like it hopped off The Sartorialist...well then you might not have tried thrifting and vintage shopping online. The musty smell of charity shops might be more welcoming than sipping tea in front of your computer, but online scouting is often a more defined and guaranteed way of finding that beautiful item without spending hours at your local SPCA shop. Of course you can't replace one with the other, but my advice is a combination of both. Regardless of whether you shop on a budget or not, the art of vintage and thrifting allow for a well rounded and unique wardrobe.

I found Guard the Vintage via Embrace Style. I spotted a coral coloured pencil skirt that I had to have.

Who is behind the shop?

Yusrah is a student and despite being young she seems to have a natural knack for the business of vintage. Her finds range from granny's favourites right through to leather pants.

Service:

The skirt that I ordered didn't fit me, but Yusrah was really great about it and offered an exchange. She was friendly and lovely and I have now met her as she travels to Durban for I heart Market.

Packaging & Postage:

The packaging was neat and pretty, with some extra touches like ribbon and a note. It took about a week and a half to arrive in Durban.

So excited to be featured on Fair Lady magazine's blog. I loved sharing my vintage and thrift tips with them. You can read the interview here.

The photo was taken during my Cape Town trip at Haas where we (my dear friend Sam & I) made a late lunch pit stop. We had really delicious ciabatta rolls and salad and it was so perfect sitting in the armchairs with a ray of sun keeping us warm.

I came to a screeching halt in CNA yesterday when I spotted the cover of the Homes & Antiques magazine! I wasn't going to take a look, but I couldn't resist and what was meant to be a quick errand run turned into a marathon reading session while my groceries slowly melted and the time ticked by. I began flipping...casually at first and then more excitedly as I tried to soak up and memorise all the things I needed to Google when I got home. My memory let me down and now all I can think about is rushing back to get the mag! It was packed with the most frame worthy images and spreads that left me drooling!

Home & Antiques is the Antiques Roadshow magazine...the BBC TV show. I quite enjoy the show as it always conjures up the idea that there is treasure in every home and that the value of something is not always the most important thing. Now...don't dismiss this mag as one for the grannies...it is a dreamy reality escape. Their site has some cool reads too...love this feature on vintage sunglasses and learnt more about Lea Stein too...I adore her brooches.

I am off to CNA now...toodles! Oh and the mag is just under R70...not bad when you see all that is inside - the pics above are a mere glimpse!

I have been reading the blog kit & nancy for a while and love the inspiration behind the name - Laura's (the creator) two grandmothers...namely Kit & Nancy.

These creations from her latest exhibition (entitled Home Beautiful) are so wondrous - wouldn't mind staring at them...most of them are sold (of course). Love, love, love her work!

I hope that I will have some time to share my travels with you...I just have to catch up on admin (booooring), but it has to be done. Then I will be blogging and sharing once more!

Newly added to my top ten shops in the WORLD list is Rock Paper Scissors on Bree Street! The owner Jodi is friendly and lovely to talk to...I like happy shopkeepers as it makes all the difference in which light the product is viewed. I felt as if all the beautiful retro pieces and accessories that I yearn for on the pages of Spaces all popped out and into Jodi's shop! Vicki from I Want That did a beautiful post on the shop too. I will be sure to include more snaps soon.

A Cape Town Outfit

I am back and so excited to share all my photos with you. I had an amazing time and feel inspired and ready to work once more!

I thought I would begin this week's posting with an outfit post...

I really like this outfit and so I should if I am wearing it.

Details:

This top reminded me of this Marc Jacobs that Alexa wore. Nude peachy pink, beaded, vintage, sheer sleeves...check, check and cheeeeeck! I found it at Bonny & Clyde behind Corner Cafe. I added the brooch to add emphasise to the delicate bead work. The brooch which is vintage and in the most amazing condition was a mere R40 at a market...steal! I recently sliced some exceptionally puffy and dramatic sleeves off a vintage blouse to make it a shirt vest...it has the most delicate collar beaded with tiny bows. I wore the deconstructed shirt under the ensemble. There isn't much of a story on the skirt - it is actually from Primark in London and I usually layer it over a little stretch lacy skirt to give it some flair and shape...also stops it riding up my stockings. The belt was a treasure I find for a couple of pounds in a Golders Green charity shop. It is patent leather with a beaded pearly bow centre. I hope you are enjoying this ridiculous in depth analysis of the history of my wardrobe...feel free to stop reading at any boring point! The bag which I adore was scouted down the South Coast on a hospice shop raid and I added a corsage that I made for myself (rare occurrence) with some of Jezze Print's ribbon. The sunglasses are my most faithful pair to date from Mr Price. They fit so comfortably and despite my clumsy nature of dropping them at least five times a day - they still live (touch wood). What else is there...oh yes shoes. My shoes are also from Mr Price. I need to have black pumps at all times and wear them to death. These are a pair I helped to create when I worked there and despite their comfort factor they also retail for R59.99 (all thanks to negotiation). Right - that's it!

I am off on a working holiday for a week. I quite enjoy my job so I don't mind doing some of it while I am on holiday.

Looking forward to great food and shopping in Cape Town. I am also spending some time being an 'intern for a day' at the studio of one of my favourite local creatives. On Friday I am hosting a panel to chat about the creative industry in South Africa (more to come soon).

Rescue the Birthday...

On Friday...my actual birthday I started feeling rather ill and ended up abandoning all cake eating efforts to instead bond with my pillow! This meant that there was also no energy for I heart Market on Saturday...I was sad to not set up shop, but needed to rest! In an attempt to rescue the dismal birthday situation I did manage to muster up enough energy to celebrate on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning.

On Saturday I had a DIY celebration and each friend decorated a notebook while gobbling coral coloured macaroons from Daniela's.

On Sunday morning I celebrated with another bunch of friends and had a breakfast bar...yogurt, mini cereal boxes and Milo. I also prepped fruit, nuts and flake to make the yogurt even more interesting.

The initial idea for a breakfast came via Cakies...check out their birthday breakfast complete with pancakes.

I am been a keen follower of The Confetti System and tried my hand at making some of their tasseled decorations. It was fun, but my attempt isn't half as wonderful as their installation pieces. I had so much fun preparing everything...I feel like doing it all again...ha ha!

My birthday invites are sent out - having a small celebration with people that I love. I found some great decor items on In Good Company. I also bought these retro labels - I just liked them!

I am excited for one of my clients - Lollyloves who is hosting a pop up shop at Arts on Main this Sunday. I think it is going to be really great!

I read about a heart sandwich press on Everything I heart's blog and I am planning to pop out soonest to get one! When my sister and I were little my mom would use a heart cookie press and it made the sandwiches taste so much better!

If you live in Durban you really should have tried Livingstons by now! Celebrated a friend's birthday there and in between forkfuls of Butter Chicken Pot Pie, sips of wine and spoonfuls of creme brulee there was much laughter!

I am looking for a new camera, but I feel quite confused by all the choices. If you have any tips or want to share...please leave a comment or email me.
